Gadgets

Q: what is a gadget, how do I add it to my blog, and how do I get rid of it?
A: A gadget is anything you add to your blog other than a postGadgets used to be called widgets and page elements. On your blog now the gadgets are: Followers and About me.
Unlike other blogging platforms (word press, my space, typepad, livejournal, multiply, facebook, orkut, friendster, hi5), on Blogger, we do not call a blog, a blog. We call it a post. When you wish to make a new blog, you should click on "new post". Other wise you would be creating blog after blog and not a single post.

Adding a post
1. Sign on to your blog using your ID and password here: www.blogger.com
2. On your dashboard click on "new post"
3. Type inside the post editor (large box) or upload a photo
4. Publish post.

Your blogging area will be filled by your posts as you add more posts. The side bars are meant for adding gadgets: About me, archives, labels list, link list etc.
Continue to add posts to your blog. One blog is usually enough for new bloggers. Please do not create any more blogs today!

Add gadget

Dashboard>>design>>add a gadget.
You will see all the gadgets listed under 4 categories:
Basics (23)
featured (15)
most popular (4)
more gadgets (1638)

remove gadget
Sign on to your blog. Click on the quick editing logo (spanner/screw driver) below the gadget. Click "remove".

Old vs new editor

Q: How can I tell which version of Blogger am I using?
A: You check under: settings>basic>select post editor.
You can change from one to the other, if you wish.
Save settings

The old editor's tool bar looks like this. Please click on image to enlarge.

The new editor's tool bar looks like this:

Delete my blog for me.

Q: How can I use the url that I've ever made ? I totally forget the username & password, so I want to create a new one now.
A: The short answer:
Please use this blog address (URL): ricky-haryadi (with a hyphen)
You can re-use the same blog name: rickyharyadi (blog name can be shared)

The long answer:

I am afraid that you seem to have got it all wrong. Things don't work this way on the internet at all. You create the mess, somebody else, or Google will not follow behind you to clear it all up. You have to clear up your own mess. Always.
If you wanted something fixed, you will have to fix it yourself. You cannot do this if you don't know the ID and password. We are here only to show you how.

Yours is not a new problem. We have numerous requests to delete blogs, daily. Google does not delete unwanted blogs. In fact they do not provide a contact email address or tel No. Volunteer helpers, like me, are bloggers just like you. We have no access or authority to do it for you. Any way, after deletion, the URL will be locked for 90 days. You cannot re-use it, any way. Unwanted blogs should be made into stub blogs or test blogs. All on the one Google account which is good for 100 blogs.

Every blogger has to realize that they are responsible for their own blogs. To manage your blog as an admin, you have to maintain an active email account and record down your password somewhere safe. That's all.

Deleting any thing Google is a sure way of putting things out of your own reach. Please don't do it.

Help! Fix it for me!

Q: I have deactivated/quitted my blog, but I dont want it to pop up on Google search!! can you fix?? Help!!
A: I assume that you have deleted your blog. Deleting any thing Google is a sure way of putting things out of your own reach. Then you will not be able to do any thing to help yourself, any more. I am afraid that you seem to have got it all wrong. Things don't work this way on the internet at all. You create the mess, somebody else will not follow behind you to clear it all up. You have to clear up your own mess. Always.
If you wanted something fixed, you will have to fix it yourself. We are here only to show you how.

To maintain control of your blogs, delete nothing. All unwanted blogs should be made into stub blogs or test blogs. Maintain the email address (active) and write down the password somewhere safe. Keep all your blogs under one account (a Google account is good for 100 blogs). This way you can always access all your blogs to fix any problems that may come up.

Roberto has a list of reasons why not:

Google account recovery team

From Google Recovery Team

Hi,

Thank you for filling out the account recovery form. We know losing access to your account can be a frustrating experience and we want to help.

At Google, we take your privacy and security seriously. We're committed to returning accounts only when we're sure we're giving them back to the accounts' owners. Unfortunately, based on the information you provided, we were unable to verify that you own this account. To ensure that we are not compromising the security of the data, we can't return the account at this time.

If you can provide additional information to verify that you own this account, please visit http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/request.py?ara=1 and submit another request, providing as much accurate information as possible. If you're unsure about specific dates, provide your best guess.

Because Google doesn't ask for much personal information when you sign up for an account, we don't have many ways to verify that you own an account. In order to verify that you're the real owner of an account, we need specific details about your account during the recovery process. We also can’t accept identification documents as a proof of account ownership because we don’t consider this a secure method. For more information on this policy, please visit http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=117219

If you are unable to provide specific information to recover the account or would like to create a new account, please visit https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

Sincerely,
The Google Account Recovery Team

I have 2 blogs!

Q: Hi I'm oldmothercath and I need a little help I went to post a new blog this morning but somehow I now have 2 blogs. Help!
A: Having 2 blogs is fine. One account is good for 100 blogs and each blog is good for countless posts.

I think you are confused by Blogger's terminology:

Unlike other blogging platforms (word press, my space, typepad, livejournal, multiply, facebook, orkut, friendster, hi5), on Blogger, we do not call a blog, a blog. We call it a post. When you wish to make a new blog, you should click on "new post" or the pencil icon. Other wise you would be creating blog after blog, unintentionally, like now. This is terrible. No one will read your blogs arranged that way, all over the internet under a different URL for each post.

1. Sign on to your blog using your ID and password here: www.blogger.com
2. On your dashboard click on "new post"
3. Type inside the post editor (large box) or upload a photo
4. Publish post.

Your blogging area will be filled by your posts as you add more posts (no limit). The side bars are meant for adding gadgets: About me, archives, labels list, link list etc. Continue to add posts to your blog. One blog is usually enough for a new blogger. Please do not create too many blogs today. What you need to do is add more posts to the 2 blogs you have now.

I do not recommend that you delete the second blog. Very often I find that deleting anything in Blogger, merely puts the item out of your own reach and does not give the expected results (peace of mind). Quite often you will have to back track, in order to solve the original problem. Some times this will involve the Google team and help from them is not so easy to get (no email address and no tel No:)

If you like, you can make the second blog into a stub blog or a test blog. You may take a peek at mine to get some idea:

Posting a screen shot

Q: How do I post a screen shot?
A: Here is the procedure on a PC:
You will find a key [PrtScrn] between the regular keyboard and the number pad at the top. Press this.
This saves the image to your clipboard. Open your paint programme and paste the image there.
Save as a jpg file and upload like any photo

I tried this; but when I press the [print screen] button, a jpg image goes directly to my Picasa file: Screen Captures as shown here:

copy right

Q: how can I block another blog from stealing my content?
A: Post the following codes as an html/Javascript, gadget on your blog:
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
<!--
  function right(e) {
    if ((document.layers || (document.getElementById && !document.all)) && (e.which == 2 || e.which == 3)) {
      alert("Copyright Content");
      return false;
    }
    else if (event.button == 2 || event.button == 3) {
      alert("Copyright Content");
      return false;
    }
    return true;
  }

  if (document.layers){
    document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);
    document.onmousedown = right;
  }
  else if (document.all && !document.getElementById){
    document.onmousedown = right;
  }

  document.oncontextmenu = new Function("alert('All Rights Reserved.');return false");

// -->
</script>

Recycle URL

Q: I just delete my blog from my old account due to privacy issue,how i can retrieve the same url to create a new blog?
A: The assumptions you have just made is not correct. Deletion does not solve any problem in Blogger. It merely puts things out of your own reach. When you deleted an URL (blog address), it is locked for 90 days.

You will have to back track. Sign back on to your dashboard and click [undelete]. After you gain back control of your blog, you need to do a proper ownership transfer.

Change ownership
Make the blog in question into a team blog, with two members, then removing the original team member:http://www.google.com/support/blogger/bin/answer.py?answer=41448

Hide my About me gadget

Q: My profile is taking up too much room. I want to move it to another page. How?
A: You can hide your bio.
Edit your [About me] gadget by clicking on the tool icon (screw driver and wrench) on the bottom right corner.
Remove the tick in the second small box [About me].
Save.

If you are still unhappy and wish to hide everything, you can remove the gadget completely from your side bar. Create a custom gadget, using a static page. Here is mine:

create a static page?
On your dashboard, click on edit posts>>edit pages>>new page
A page editor appears. Create a title for your page, create the page, publish page.
You are allowed to have 10 static Pages. They will appear horizontally, as tabs under your header. The first tab will always be [Home]. You may choose the names for the other tabs e.g. About me, contact me, photo galleries, recipes, my other blogs, etc.

Access my blog

Q: I am new to this and posted a blog yesterday but now  I don't know how to access it to update it.
A: Please sign on with your ID and password here: www.blogger.com
That will take you to your dashboard (control centre) where you can add new posts, images, gadgets or edit posts, template, change the font, text colour etc.

Delete blog

Q: I have 4 blogs on my account, and I want to delete 3 of them. How do I delete a blog?
A: Deletion does not solve any problem in Blogger. It merely puts things out of your own reach. When you deleted an URL (blog address), it is locked for 90 days. You cannot re-use that URL.

Many new bloggers assume that deleting an item will make the problem go away. It doesn't. Your deleted blog will continue to haunt you for 90 days; some times for a much longer period. If the search engines already found and indexed your blog, a cached copy will remain for months on Google servers.

It is much better to change your unwanted blogs into stub blogs, removing all personal details, photos and posts on it. This way you retain control over all your blogs. Here is my stub blog: http://davidchin88.blogspot.com
Better still, change it into a test blog and use it to try out new ideas. Here is my test blog: http://davidchin8888.blogspot.com

but if you insist...
delete blog
Sign on using your ID and password here: www.blogger.com
Go to dashboard and click on:
1. settings
2. basic
(under "blog tools" you have 3 options. One of them is "delete blog")
3. delete blog
4. delete this blog

You are now on your own...

Gadgets

Q: Is it possible to show different gadgets for different page on my blog?
A: No, it is not possible because your posts and static pages share the same common template for the blog. The template carries all the gadgets, header, footer and side bars. On this framework we add our posts and pages.

Where is my blog?

Q: I am having problem with my blog. I see "I can't find my blog on the web, where is it?" please help me.
A: That was a link. You click on it to read the article. Click here now and follow the instructions:

Gadgets at the bottom

Q: My gadgets are all at the bottom of the page. Help?
A: Gadgets fallen down
Yes, the problem is with your most recent post dated: Wed, 8th June, 2011.
Edit this post.
On your post editor toggle between [edit HTML] and [compose] a few times.
Publish post
Your gadgets should come back up.

How did I know?
It is a process of elimination in order to find out which post is causing the gadgets to drop down. You progressively view each post from the most recent, on your home page.  Click on each post title in turn. Each time check your blog to see whether the gadgets are back in the side bar. The post causing the damage is the one, more recent than that one (by date).

Reason:
Probably one missing half of a div tag: <div></div>
This cure was invented by Katney. Credits to her!

Quick editor (pencil) disappeared

Q: Quick editing icon (pencil) disappeared!
A: Please go to your dashboard:
settings>basic>show quick editing on your blog.
Select [yes]
Save settings

If that does not work then go to Design>Edit HTML>revert widgets to default.

Caution:
This will not harm any of your widget content but any tweaks you may have made to the div class areas in the Edit HTML page will be removed. Also if you added any 3rd party gadgets in the Edit HTML page it may remove them as well. But this should fix your quick edit icon problem.

3 methods for uploading photos.

Q: Having trouble dragging photos once I upload them to the post. Are there other options?
A: Yes, use the new editor which uploads your image at the spot where you placed your cursor (inside the post editor). No dragging required.

Updated post editor
Please go to settings>basic>select post editor.
Choose [updated editor].
Save settings

3 methods to place photos:

Blog photos disappeared

Q: I accidentally deleted pic albums out of picassa which erased them from my blog! HELP
A: That was unfortunate. It happened to me too. I deleted some Picasa web albums which have zero quantity photos and somehow this also resulted in some photos disappearing from my blog. I spent a few days searching and managed to find all the original photos for the blog and uploaded all the missing photos once more. A lot of unnecessary work indeed.

The most unfair part of this experience was the delayed action. The images did not disappear immediately after I deleted the PWA and I kept going, doing a lot of collateral damage. My photos only disappeared the next day from my blog! By the time I realized what was happening, it was too late. I am afraid that I do not know of a quick way for you to replace all your missing photos.

However, this bad experience motivated me to look for a new way to upload images to my blog. You may wish to try it too?

Another method to upload photos to blog:
Instead of using the [Blog this] button, have you tried using the [Upload button] on Picasa? It is the first button with the green arrow. I used this to upload large numbers of images to Picasa Web Album. It took about 8 seconds per image. I uploaded photos in batches of 25 for use on my blog.

From there, it is a breeze to post them to your blog:
On your post editor, click the photo icon on the tool bar as before.
Select [from Picasa Web Album]
Select album, select photos, [add selected]. The transfer is made instantly, no waiting and no limit on the number of photos selected.
Publish post.
